The Swing Dance Company is a partner-dance school built around swing and jive, where much of the appeal comes from the social side as well as the steps. Sessions run in a friendly evening-class format that couples and singles alike can drop into. It suits anyone who fancies learning a lively, upbeat style without feeling out of their depth. The emphasis lands squarely on having a good time while you pick things up.
Regulars talk warmly about the fun, unhurried atmosphere and the friendships that come with it, describing evenings that are as much about the company as the dancing. Teachers such as Bob are singled out for clear, patient instruction that keeps everyone laughing. It tends to appeal to grown-ups who want a genuine social scene alongside their lessons.
Classes focus on swing and jive, breaking each move down into steps you can actually remember and then stringing them together on the floor. Beginners are walked through timing, footwork and the give-and-take of leading and following, with more variations added as confidence grows. Counting the eight and sorting your left from your right is about as taxing as it gets early on. The pace is designed so complete newcomers can join and keep up.
A first-timer can expect a relaxed welcome and no pressure to know anything in advance, since the basics are covered from scratch. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in and flat, smooth-soled shoes that let you turn easily. Come as you are, with or without a partner.
The classes draw a sociable crowd from the surrounding area, and it is worth checking directions and parking with the organisers when you plan your first visit.
We have tried a few different Dance schools to learn to Jive but the Swing Dance Company is by far the best. Bob is a fantastic teacher giving clear instructions on each move and making the evening fun. We have made loads of new friends through dancing and have a great social life. We love it and you will too 😃 x— Catherine Ford
We hired Brooke and Debbie to deliver a lesson as part of the evening entertainment at our wedding and they did an absolutely fantastic job. Their set was perfect and all of our guests had a brilliant time. It was a real pleasure having them there on our special day!— B.A.J. Cullimore
I defy anyone not to enjoy these classes, the hardest bit is learning to count to 8 and learning your Left from your Right (thought I had mastered this 50 years ago). Great fun and we’ve made some lovely friends. Highly recommended.— John Gledhill
Yes, plenty of people arrive on their own and dancers often rotate during class so everyone gets practice. Swing and jive are very sociable, so coming solo is a good way to meet people.
Something comfortable that lets you move freely, paired with flat shoes that slide and turn easily rather than grip the floor. Avoid anything too stiff or heavy.
Prices vary by venue and whether you pay per session or in a block. It is best to contact the school directly for current rates.
Swing and jive are a friendly starting point because the basic rhythm is easy to feel and the mood is light-hearted. Many people find the upbeat music makes early mistakes easy to laugh off.
A social partner style like jive suits adults well, since it is playful, sociable and forgiving of beginners. Starting with a group class takes the pressure off.
Gentle, regular movement can be beneficial for many people, but anyone with a heart condition should check with their doctor before taking up a new activity.
