The Sally Prout School of Dancing is a long-running dance school based in Stonehouse, teaching ballet, tap and jazz to children of varying ages and abilities. It is a good fit for parents looking for a structured, encouraging place for a child to grow as a dancer over several years. The school runs regular graded classes and, from time to time, puts on shows that give pupils a stage to perform on.
Families who have been through the school tend to praise the enthusiasm and commitment of the teachers, and the sense that children come first. The atmosphere reads as friendly and professional rather than pressured, with a genuine care for each pupil's progress.
Weekly classes cover classical ballet, tap and jazz, taught in age and stage groupings so younger beginners and more experienced dancers are given work suited to them. Pupils who wish to can work towards recognised graded examinations and medals, though sitting exams is not a requirement to take part. Lessons build technique, musicality and confidence step by step, with the option to develop further for anyone keen to take dance more seriously.
A newcomer can expect a warm reception and a class pitched to their child's age and experience, so nobody is thrown in at the deep end. Comfortable clothing that allows free movement and appropriate soft shoes are a sensible starting point, and the school can advise on any specific kit once you enquire.
The school is situated in Stonehouse and is reachable by the usual local road and public transport links, with the option to check parking and access when you get in touch.
I would recommend The Sally Proud School of Dancing to anyone with an interest in dance. My daughter has been doing ballet and tap with them for a number of years now and I have been so impressed by the teachers enthusiasm, commitment and dedication. They really take time to get to know the girls and find out how to bring the best out of them. I've seen my daughter grow and flourish into a beautiful and confident performer.
The lessons are also fun and lead to the building of great friendships. My daughter loves seeing her ballet friends every week and I hope that they have many years toge— Sarah Hall
I'd would absolutely recommend Sally Prout School of Dance to any budding ballerinas out there! I don't know what I was expecting when I signed my daughter up for it, but what I've found is a fun, friendly and professional school who put the children first. My 6 year old recently had her first ballet exam, and the teachers were brilliant at putting the girls at ease and making it an enjoyable experience for them. They were happy to go out of their way to make the girls look fabulous (I've still yet to master the ballet bun!) and there were smiles all round. My daughter absolutely loves it, and— Zoe Hopkins
My daughter has danced ballet, tap and jazz variously over the last 7 years and has really enjoyed all her classes. The school is very professionally run and the teaching is excellent (as evidenced by the exam results – although exams are not compulsory). The school puts on an amazing show every two years to showcase the children and their dancing. I'll never forget my little baby Toto in 'The Wizard of Oz' not long after she started. One of the other baby Totos is now at the Royal Ballet School! I'm very happy to recommend this dance school.— Fiona Warin
Since my daughter started ballet it has been such a positive influence in her life in many ways, it has helped her build her confidence, she has made wonderful friends, and also learned important life skills such as discipline and commitment. Most importantly she absolutely loves it! The teachers are all so caring and make each lesson enjoyable, whilst the students are gaining a qualification in dance. I would highly recommend The Sally Prout School of Dance to anyone, it's been the best decision we ever made!— Michele Brounger
Yes. Ballet, tap and jazz are all danced solo, so a partner is not needed to take part or to progress.
Comfortable, flexible clothing you can move freely in, along with suitable soft shoes, is ideal for a first class. The school can point you towards anything more specific once your child has a place.
Fees vary by class type, length and age group, so it is best to contact the school directly for current pricing and any joining details.
For young starters, ballet gives a strong foundation in posture and coordination, while tap is often popular for its rhythm and immediate fun.
Provision here centres on children's classes, so an adult looking to begin would do well to ask the school what may be available or suitable.
Gentle, regular movement can support general wellbeing, but anyone with a heart condition should speak with their doctor before starting any activity.
