The Dance Lab is a popular dance school in Putney, south-west London. It has earned a devoted following among adults learning social and partner styles. Many describe it as a genuinely welcoming community as much as a place to learn.
Reviewers speak of encouraging teachers, real progress from nervous beginner to confident performer, and a sense of belonging. It suits adults who want supportive, sociable tuition and the chance to build lasting friendships through dance.
Dance classes in London here place a strong focus on partner styles, with salsa classes in London and ballroom favourites such as waltz and jive featuring prominently. Adult dance classes in London are the heart of the timetable, and dance lessons in London progress through clear beginner and improver stages. A typical class drills the basics, then links steps into flowing combinations set to music. The teaching balances technique with genuine enjoyment, which is why so many students keep coming back.
Newcomers are warmly received and eased into the basics before anything is put to music. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in and shoes with a smooth sole, and bring water. You do not need to bring a partner to take part.
The school is located in Putney, a well-connected part of south-west London with good rail and bus links.
I've been dancing salsa for about 18 months so far, much of it with Incognito, and I've gone from stumbling through my basic once every two weeks, to performing at shows over Christmas. The teachers have been fantastic, and have offered so much advice and encouragement both in and out of lessons; plus the regular workshops are a valuable insight into the fundamentals of salsa.
It's not just the skills they've given me though, it's also the good people I've met along the way through their classes, courses, workshops and fantastic socials.
It also helps that the classes are easily the best val— cmeast
Highly recommend! I've taken lessons in waltx and jive (beignner and then novice) with Brian for the last couple of months and I LOVED it! It's tricky to imagine how they can teach 2 dances in just 4 lessons but Brian manages it in an easy-to-learn way and is a fun lovely guy to boot!
Most importantly is that I went on my own so worried about whether I would have a partner to dance with but I shouldn't have worried; they do the lessons in such a way that you swap constantly so you learn to dance with lots of different people who might be short or tall so you learn how to adjust your dancing w— Hazel Keegan
"Thank you for helping me to discover the amazing world of dancing!))" – I wrote here 4 years ago. Since then this place has become a second home to me and my 'happy' place. I can not imagine my life without the DanceLab team and this whole experience of dancing and developing. It is better than gym and meditation combined, for both mind and body. Can not wait to go back full time and even though I will be moving out of Putney, I have carefully factored in my new house location, so it is easy for me to commute back to The Dance Lab!— Yulia Ushakova
Went to Christmas Ball. Very well organised with a fab band, so good to dance to live music.
This was my first event there and went on my own. There were more women to men and as I didn’t know anyone there it would have been even better if there had been taxi dancers to dance with as those there tended to dance with people they knew.
The show dances were great and I loved my rumba with Brian, thank you! Merry Christmas 🎅🏻🎉— Sasha Mayes
Salsa is very learnable, and beginners here often progress from basic steps to performing within a matter of months. The timing takes a little practice, but it soon feels natural.
Yes, most salsa students start with no experience at all. Beginner classes begin from scratch and you can join without a partner.
Yes, adults can take up ballet successfully through beginner classes. Regular practice steadily builds strength, alignment and technique at any age.
No age is too late to enjoy ballet. Progress depends on consistency rather than starting young.
The grapevine, step-touch, kick-ball-change, pivot turn and shuffle are common foundation steps. They recur across most beginner routines.
Routines built on a simple, repeating grapevine are the easiest to start with. Contact the school to find out which beginner classes are currently running.
