Frequently Asked Questions

How do you start ballroom dancing?

The usual way in is a beginner class where an instructor teaches the basic steps and hold. You do not need any experience, just comfortable shoes and a willingness to try. Starting with a group class lets you learn the fundamentals before anything more advanced.

What ballroom dance to learn first?

Many beginners start with the waltz or the social foxtrot because their steady rhythm is easy to follow. Some schools begin with the quickstep or cha cha cha instead. Your teacher will usually pick a first dance that suits the class.

Can you learn to dance without a partner?

Yes, you can join ballroom classes without a partner, as teachers often rotate dancers or pair people up. Solo attendance is common and nothing to worry about. It is worth checking with the school so they can plan the class.

What should I wear to a beginner dance class?

Comfortable clothing that lets you move, paired with smooth-soled shoes for turning, works well for ballroom. Avoid trainers with grippy soles that can catch on the floor. Bring water, as even gentle ballroom raises a light sweat.

How much does a dance class usually cost?

Costs vary by school and depend on class length and whether you pay per session or by block. The school can tell you its current rates when you enquire. Some places offer a first taster at a reduced price.

Which dance is best for beginners?

In ballroom, dances with a clear, steady beat such as the waltz suit newcomers well. The best choice is one you find enjoyable enough to keep practising. Your instructor can recommend a starting dance based on the class.
