What Dancers Say About Surrey Hills Dance Centre

5/5 from 14 Google reviews.

My son and his partner compete on the open circuit (as juveniles and they are about to compete as first time juniors). They have lessons from John as well as Michael and Nika. The quality of teaching is outstanding – these guys really under what is required to compete at a high level and put a structure in place to make that happen. The rate of improvement my son has made since starting with John, Michael and Nika is outstanding. Not only that both my son and his partner can’t wait for their lesson – they love their lessons but also recognise the stretch that they get and are hugely grateful f— Penny Street

Perfect for all levels of dance experience; from complete beginner to champion level. The teachers cater to different learning needs and have a fabulous way of helping pupils to fully understand not only the steps, but how the right movement and posture can enhance the performance dramatically. Whether you just want to join a group class for some fun, needing a wedding dance, would like private lessons for personal improvement and/or competing, this is a great school for all ages. A very friendly environment for learning, with experienced teachers that are kind, approachable and love to teach.— Linda Jamieson

We had dance lessons from Michael and Nika in the run up to our wedding. Neither of us had experience of dancing before, and Michael and Nika choreographed the dance to our chosen song.

The lessons were great fun – both Michael and Nika had a huge amount of patience, and were great teachers. The end result was far better than we could have hoped for – at the start I never would have guessed that we would be capable of incorporating a lift into a dance routine after only a few hours of lessons!

Thanks very much for all your help Michael and Nika!— James Gill

We had dance lessons with Nika in the run up to our wedding, as we wanted to do a first dance but neither of us are dancers. Nika is an amazing teacher, she went through a number of different styles with us and was very flexible with which parts we felt comfortable doing & which parts felt too much for us. She is patient, very good at explaining how to do things, and great at packing as much into the lessons as possible. The first dance went really well & we really enjoyed the lessons & the final product. I would 100% recommend Nika to anyone!— Nadia Chew

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to learn ballet as an adult?

Yes. Adult ballet concentrates on posture, strength and controlled movement, and classes are pitched for grown-up beginners rather than aspiring professionals.

What age is too late to start ballet?

There is no upper limit. Adults take up ballet at any age and work at a pace suited to their own body and ability.

Can you learn to dance without a partner?

Yes, many styles can be learned solo, and even partner dances are often taught by rotating dancers so you need not bring your own partner.

What should I wear to a beginner dance class?

Comfortable clothing you can move in and shoes that let you turn on a smooth floor are ideal. Avoid anything too restrictive.

How much does a dance class usually cost?

Costs depend on whether you choose group classes or private lessons and how you pay. The centre can give you its current rates.

Which dance is best for beginners?

A dance with a steady, even rhythm such as the waltz is a gentle first choice. The best fit often depends on the music and style you enjoy.
