Starlight Dancing is a ballroom and Latin dance school run by a professional dancing family with generations of teaching behind them. It offers structured beginners' courses across the classic dances, delivered with real expertise and a good sense of fun. It is an excellent choice for couples and individuals who want to learn properly while enjoying themselves.
Students praise the well-structured lessons, deep knowledge and humour that put nervous beginners at ease within minutes. It suits people who value skilled teaching alongside a sociable calendar of events and dancing weekends.
Beginners' courses cover the familiar ballroom and Latin dances, such as the quickstep, and are built to take you from your first attempts to confident social dancing. Each lesson is clearly organised, with plenty of chances to practise and reinforce what you have learned before moving on. Social events, weekends and dancing holidays give students a friendly setting in which to put their new skills to use.
Almost everyone feels nervous at first, but the teachers are known for settling newcomers quickly with clear, patient guidance. Wear something comfortable and smart-casual with shoes you can pivot in, and you will be dancing before you know it.
The school welcomes dancers from its surrounding community; contact the team for details of class locations and times.
We have just completed the beginners course of the Quickstep and, as always, we thoroughly enjoyed it. We have now completed about 6 beginners courses and they have all been brilliant. Christopher and Emma are incredible teachers, highly knowledgeable and talented dancers themselves (they gave us the most wonderful dance display at the Christmas Ball) but they are also such lovely people, extremely patient and understanding of us slightly less natural dancers! They make every session enormous fun and by the end of every course we do feel we have a routine we are able and confident to perform. — Fiona Crace
Starlight Dancing is run by a professional dance family that has been teaching through generations. They are so skilled in what they do and how they teach but they make it fun too with their great sense of humour. Everyone when they first start feels nervous but within minutes they have you under their wing looking after you and you can start to enjoy all the fun and feel like you are part of this incredible dancing family.— Linda
Highly professional teachers, fantastic team with a sense of humour. I have learnt so much in such a short time. Lessons are well structured, with lots of opportunities to practice and attend social events and weekends/dancing holidays. There is a good atmosphere in the classes. I met many really nice people and even though I don't have a dancing partner, there is always someone I can dance with.— Jei Jei
Lorraine, Chris and Emma all teach with an amazing amount of enthusiasm and encouragement no matter what your age or ability. They will push you to strive for your best but will never go beyond your capability or make you feel uncomfortable with the steps.
You go to the lessons looking forward to being challenged and always come away with a big smile having worked hard and made progress.— Stephen Chambers
Yes. Plenty of people join on their own, and classes are run so that solo dancers can take part fully, often by rotating partners during the session.
Comfortable clothing you can move in, paired with shoes that stay on and allow you to turn, is ideal. Smart-casual is perfectly fine while you are starting out.
Prices vary by course length and format, so the school is best placed to confirm current rates. It is worth contacting them directly to plan your first block.
Dances with a clear, steady rhythm such as the waltz are gentle starting points, while livelier options suit those wanting energy. The teachers can guide your choice.
Adults often begin with a slower ballroom dance to build confidence, then branch into Latin styles. Structured beginners' courses like these make the transition easy.
Gentle dancing can be an enjoyable form of light exercise for some, but anyone with a heart condition should seek medical advice first and inform the teacher so classes can be adjusted.
