History

The theatre was founded in 1683 by Richard Sadler, who was a vintner from the City of London. The theatre was originally named Sadler’s Wells Theatre, and it was the first theatre in London to be built specifically for the purpose of presenting plays. The theatre was originally located near Sadler’s Wells, a natural spring in Clerkenwell, but it moved to its current location in Rosebery Avenue in 1998.
