Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance is a specialist dance conservatoire in Twickenham, south-west London. It provides high-level vocational training that gives equal weight to ballet and contemporary dance. It is aimed at serious dancers pursuing professional training, with short intensives that open the doors more widely.
Current and visiting students describe outstanding, top-tier teaching, beautiful studios and a distinctive fifty-fifty split between ballet and contemporary. Those who attended summer and autumn intensives found them intense but hugely rewarding, so the school suits committed dancers ready to be stretched.
The core training is a demanding vocational programme built around both classical ballet and contemporary technique, complemented by creative and performance work. For those not on the full course, short intensives pack ballet, contemporary and creative dance into concentrated days, and while the offering sits apart from typical dance classes in Twickenham or dance lessons Twickenham, it represents the most advanced end of local provision. If you are exploring social styles instead, this conservatoire is geared towards serious performance training rather than recreational classes.
Attending an intensive means long, full days combining ballet and contemporary with an end-of-course showing, in a supportive setting where newcomers still make friends. Bring appropriate dancewear and ballet and contemporary footwear, and arrive ready for a rigorous but rewarding schedule.
The school occupies a landmark building in Twickenham and is reachable by the area's south-west London transport links.
Just attended their 6 day summer intensive 2023. It was amazing. Brilliant really! They had a good long day, with a combination of ballet, contemporary and creative dance every day. I enjoyed the end of week show. I made one or 2 friends, teachers were awesome too. The studios are well presented with good flooring. The changing rooms and toilets are unisex but you could enquire ahead like me to have access to a staff toilet or singular disabled toilet if that is more comfortable or needed. At the end I was given a Rambert t-shirt and bag merchandise for attending the intensive. I think I will — Cece21Rose
As a student currently enrolled at Rambert School there is really nothing bad I can say about this place. The school is perhaps the most prestigious Ballet and Contemporary dance school in the UK with its top tier training and outstanding team of staff, Rambert school offers more than just a place to learn how to dance, it is a place where students will grow as people and the staff at Rambert help them to expand their mindset and become inclusive and caring. Rambert is the most understanding of every students individual needs and lifestyles and is an strong advocate for letting people be thems— Daniel Bennett
I had a great couple days at Rambert School’s autumn intensive! Great teachers and such beautiful studios! I love their concept of 50% Ballet and 50% Contemporary rather than focusing on one of the two!!— Zoë
It was really good just popped in for a quick class great training facility— Alfred Taahi
Ballroom is usually begun by joining a beginners' class at a social dance school; note that this conservatoire specialises in ballet and contemporary rather than ballroom.
Many people start ballroom with the waltz for its steady count, though for ballroom tuition you would look to a social dance school rather than this contemporary and ballet institution.
Salsa's basic step comes quickly to most people, with fluency following through practice, but it falls outside the classical and contemporary focus of this school.
Yes, a complete beginner can learn salsa in a dedicated class, though salsa is not part of the vocational training offered here.
Line dances commonly use the grapevine, walks forward and back, a touch, a kick and a turn; line dancing, however, is a social style rather than one taught at this conservatoire.
Repetitive routines such as the Electric Slide are the easiest to begin with, as the same steps recur throughout the track.
