I started Adult Beginner tap classes in Jan 2020, after years of wanting to learn. I was nervous as at 59, with no previous dance experience, i thought i had left it too late! I needn't have worried as Nikki is a fabulous teacher and breaks each step down to give you confidence. Tap dancing is fun, good exercise and i have met some lovely people. I have enjoyed it so much and made good progress, so i have enrolled on the Grade 3 exam course too!— Philippa Daniel
Nikki is so lovely and welcoming. From the very first lesson she helped me just slot straight in even thought I had never done tap before. She's always happy to help make dances possible for any level, even with long term injuries. The new studio is looking amazing as well, and is getting better all the time! Nikki has also made video classes possible during lockdown that are just as instructive. Would highly recommend New You Dance Cymru.— Stacey Lloyd
I dance at revs an it is amazing— Rainbow squad
Begin with a beginner class covering posture, hold and a simple dance like the Waltz. Booking an introductory session lets you test whether it suits you before committing.
The Waltz is a common first dance because its three-count rhythm is easy to feel. Dancers often add the Quickstep or a Latin style once the basics are secure.
Yes, and this school's track record with adult beginners in tap shows how supportive later-life tuition can be. Ask whether adult ballet is currently offered.
It is never too late, as the reviewer who began tap at 59 demonstrates. Adult classes are pitched to suit beginners of any age.
Typical moves include the grapevine, shuffle, kick-ball-change, pivot turn and heel dig. These repeat across many routines, so they quickly become familiar.
Short, repetitive routines with a simple count are the gentlest introduction. Ask which beginner line dances the school starts people on.
