About Learn West Coast Swing with WestCo's Swing London – Petts Wood

Reviewers describe the sessions as genuinely good fun, with teachers who put nervous newcomers at ease and rotate through different partners. It suits adults of any experience level, whether you are stepping onto a dance floor for the first time or brushing off rusty skills, and the atmosphere is sociable rather than competitive.

Classes & Dance Styles

The core focus is West Coast Swing, a versatile partner dance danced to everything from blues to pop. Sessions typically break moves down slowly, then let you practise them with rotating partners so you build lead-and-follow skills naturally. While the emphasis is swing, the wider search for dance lessons in Orpington also turns up ballroom dancing, ballet and line dancing locally, and this class is a strong option if you specifically want a relaxed, social partner style. A typical evening moves from a taught pattern into open practice and social dancing.

What to Expect on Your First Visit

You can come along without a partner, as the class rotates people through so everyone dances. Wear comfortable clothes and smooth-soled shoes that let you turn easily on the floor, and simply arrive ready to give it a try.

I absolutely love WestCos weekly classes! They’re so much fun. I feel I have learnt so much in such a small amount of time and that is down to having amazing teachers that put you at ease and will help and encourage you when you are finding the class difficult. Having different DJs is great too meaning the music varies each week- everyone is happy! Pauline does such a great job of making everyone feel welcome- all of her venues are so friendly!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you start ballroom dancing?

The easiest way in is a beginner group class where an instructor teaches the basics step by step. Although this class specialises in West Coast Swing, the same principle applies: start with a welcoming beginner session and build from there.

What ballroom dance to learn first?

Many beginners start with the waltz or a rhythmic dance like the cha-cha because the timing is clear. If you prefer a modern, improvised partner style, West Coast Swing as taught here is a very approachable first dance.

Is it possible to learn ballet as an adult?

Absolutely, and many adults take up ballet later in life. This particular class focuses on West Coast Swing, but adult ballet classes are widely available in the Orpington area if that is your goal.

What age is too late to start ballet?

There is no upper age limit; people begin ballet in their fifties, sixties and beyond. Adult classes are paced to suit grown-up bodies and prior experience.

Can you learn to dance without a partner?

Yes, and it is expected here. The class rotates partners throughout, so you can turn up solo and still dance the whole evening.

What should I wear to a beginner dance class?

Comfortable clothing and smooth-soled shoes that allow you to pivot are ideal. Avoid grippy trainers, as swing involves plenty of turning.
