JW Dance

For younger dancers finding their feet, JW Dance has built a strong reputation around ballet and tap. Run by Mrs Wilson, known to the children as an engaging and attentive teacher, the school draws praise from parents whose children arrive shy and grow in focus and confidence. One reviewer noted improvements in her five-year-old's core strength and balance since starting. Older students describe lessons that push them to become independent rather than simply copy along.

About JW Dance

This is a children's and youth dance school with ballet and tap at its core, led by a teacher parents describe as skilled at holding a class's attention. The atmosphere is warm and encouraging, with an emphasis on learning that sticks rather than passive imitation. Reviews come from families whose children have stayed and thrived.

Classes & Dance Styles

Ballet and tap form the backbone of the timetable, taught in a way that suits children learning discipline and coordination alongside enjoyment. Choreography is often practised in small groups so students retain the steps themselves, which builds independence. The teaching approach favours confidence and genuine understanding over rote copying, a point older students single out for praise.

What to Expect on Your First Visit

For a child's first class, comfortable clothing they can move in and the appropriate shoes for ballet or tap are the essentials. It is worth checking with the school which class matches your child's age and stage. A settled, patient teacher makes the first session far less daunting for a nervous newcomer.

Location & Contact

Children's dance schools like this one give young people a structured, sociable introduction to movement and performance. Ballet and tap remain among the most popular first styles for building coordination and stage confidence.

Carris (16): lessons are very engaging and encourage the students to become confident and independent in their dancing abilities. For example, when learning choreography we perform it in mini groups, meaning we have to retain the information ourselves and not just copy others which is great for learning! I've only gone to a few lessons so far but I've improved a lot since my old studio, noticably in foot flexibility and overall ballet technique. The teachers are very encouraging and know exactly how to correct the students down to the miniscule details and really perfect our technique. For a l— Emma Bellamy

Superb! Jo is an accomplished dancer and encredibly good dance instructor. She engages with my daughter and the other girls in the class in such a way that not only demands their full attention, but ensures they learn and enjoy every class thoroughly! I am highly impressed at my daughters speed at which she is learning and she cannot wait to get back to her ballet/tap classes after the Christmas break!

Thank you so much Jo! You are awesome! Xxx— Samantha Hill

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you learn to dance without a partner?

Yes. Styles such as ballet and tap are danced solo or in a group, with no partner required. Even partnered styles are often taught with rotation so you can attend alone.

What should I wear to a beginner dance class?

Comfortable, close-fitting clothing that lets the teacher see your line, along with the correct footwear for the style. Ballet uses soft shoes while tap needs tap shoes, so it is worth checking before you start.

How much does a dance class usually cost?

Costs differ between schools and depend on class length and whether you book by term. Asking the school for its current fees is the most reliable way to plan.

Which dance is best for beginners?

For children, ballet and tap are classic starting points that build coordination and rhythm. The best choice is usually the one the child is most excited to try.

What is the best dance to start as an adult?

Adults often enjoy sociable styles such as ballroom, salsa or tap, which are taught from scratch in beginner classes. Picking one that appeals to you makes it far easier to stick with.

Is dancing good for heart failure?

Gentle dancing can support general cardiovascular health, but anyone with heart failure should check with their doctor before starting. A medical professional can advise on safe levels of activity.
