Beat Feet Academy Of Dance is a Derby children's dance school with a devoted following and a run of glowing five-star reviews. Families describe children who joined as toddlers and stayed for years, gradually adding disciplines as their confidence grew. Parents single out teaching that is kind, inclusive and clearly happy in its work. If you are looking for a nurturing dance school in the Mickleover area, it has earned the trust of the families around it.
The academy focuses on young dancers, with a teaching team praised for getting to know each child individually. Reviewers note how much confidence their children gain, often starting with a single class and branching into others over time. Boys and girls alike are made to feel that dance is for them.
The school offers several disciplines, with families mentioning ballet, tap and modern among the options children progress through. As one of the ballet classes in Derby aimed squarely at younger dancers, it builds foundations gently and encourages children to take on more as they are ready. For parents comparing dance classes in Derby for their children, the appeal is the steady, supportive way skills are layered up. Regular shows give students a chance to perform what they have learned.
Children should wear comfortable dancewear that allows free movement, with appropriate footwear for their class. A first session is about settling in and feeling welcome, so there is no need for anything elaborate to begin.
Mickleover and the wider Derby area are well served for children's dance, with several schools running exam and performance programmes. A long-established, family-focused academy like this appeals to parents wanting continuity.
We highly recommend Beat Feet Academy of Dance. My daughter joined almost 5 years ago and she started taking one dance class per week. Second year she picked another dance and soon after she started the 3rd one. She is very happy when she is asked about the Academy and her teachers, Miss Julie is such a lovely and kind person. The shows Miss Julie organise and the end of each school year and extraordinary and children cannot wait to attend and show their performances and work they have done over the year. My daughter will continue to attend this school as much as she wants and looking forward — Andreea Barcaru
My daughter has been attending Beat Feet Academy for 5 years now & has always enjoyed every lesson.
From joining the academy at the age of 3 & watching her confidence & dancing skills develop has been a joy to watch.
Miss Julie & all the team work extremely hard to get to know all their students, support them in developing their dance skills, confidence & encourage them to push themselves.
Each year the dance school holds a full school dance show & as a parent it is amazing to see all the children dance their socks off & beam with pride. We highly recommend Beat Feat to any little boy or girl — Melissa Siddiqui
My Son started Beat Feet at the age of 3 as he wanted to do "Boy Ballet". 3 years later, he now does Ballet, Tap and Modern.
The teachers at Beat Feet are welcoming, kind, inclusive and obviously get great pleasure from working with the children. They go above and beyond to encourage both the shy children to participate fully and to enable all the children to show off their personalities.
The summer shows are a delight for both the children and the parents who get to see their children shine on stage. The Christmas choreography competition really enables the children to go wild with their imag— Susie Harris
My daughter joined Beat Feet when she was 3, just before the first lockdown, I think she’d only done 4 lessons before classes had to be put on hold. Julie and the team rapidly put so much work into an online offering for all students which were amazing to be part of. Also offering free additional classes and family classes to help keep everyone entertained and fit during lockdown. I also joined the adult Zumba classes which are fantastic for fitness but also a really lovely group to be sort of. Julie and all the staff are professional, polite, caring accommodating and just generally lovely. My— Natalie Jones
Salsa is among the more approachable partner dances to begin, as the basic step follows a repeating count most people manage in a single session. Fluency, timing and styling take longer, but the basics come fast.
Yes. Salsa is routinely taught from scratch, and beginners with no experience form the bulk of any starter class. Consistent practice matters more than any natural gift.
It is. Adult ballet is built for people starting later, developing posture, strength and technique gradually. The aims differ from a child's exam path, but steady progress is well within reach.
No age is too late for recreational ballet. Professional training starts young, but classes for adults welcome all ages and adjust to individual fitness and mobility.
Frequently used steps include the grapevine, the step-touch, the kick-ball-change, the pivot turn and the shuffle. Line dances combine these familiar moves in varying sequences.
Simple, repeating routines such as the Cupid Shuffle or the Electric Slide are common first choices, since a short sequence loops throughout the track.
