Ballroom Dance Classes

These ballroom dance classes are held at Hyde Town Hall in Greater Manchester, run under the Donahey's banner, and have won affection from those who attend. One reviewer, dragged along reluctantly and braced for embarrassment, found the opposite: warm instruction and plenty of good humour. Group lessons run from complete beginner through to more advanced, and no partner is required. The tone is friendly and firmly on the side of enjoyment.

About Ballroom Dance Classes

Regulars single out instructors who are professional yet approachable, mixing clear teaching with light-hearted chat. The sessions are well organised and sociable, with a crowd of friendly faces to dance and talk with whatever your level. That balance of proper instruction and a relaxed room is what keeps people coming back.

Classes & Dance Styles

Group classes run across the levels, so a nervous first-timer and a seasoned dancer both have somewhere to sit. Because you do not need to bring a partner, coming on your own is entirely usual, and the beginner sessions start from the basics of timing and frame. As confidence grows, more figures are layered in across the ballroom and Latin dances. The venue's grand town-hall setting adds a certain occasion to the evenings.

What to Expect on Your First Visit

You can turn up alone and be looked after, so there is no need to arrange a partner in advance. Wear something comfortable and shoes you can turn in. Arriving in good time for the beginners' section gives you the best footing.

Location & Contact

Hyde lies in Tameside to the east of Manchester, within easy reach of Denton, Stalybridge and the surrounding towns.

What Dancers Say About Ballroom Dance Classes

4.5/5 from 8 Google reviews.

My wife dragged me kicking and screaming to our first Donahey's dance lesson a couple of years ago. I was convinced that my two left feet would make me stand out as a clod-hopping failure, and that I would be mocked and ridiculed by all involved. How wrong I was. The excellent instructors proved to be extremely professional, patient and non-judgmental, and the other students proved to be very friendly and helpful. Everyone understands what it's like to be a beginner as they have all experienced their first lesson, and they can remember how nerve- wracking it can be to walk into the dance hall— Chris Harrison

The dance lessons provided by Donahey's are excellent fun! You do not need a partner to attend, and they offer group dance lessons from beginners to advanced. Furthermore, the instructors are excellent, friendly, and throw in a lot of good light hearted chat. You really can't go wrong in attending Donahey's lessons for fun on a week night!

Lessons are 1 hr in duration. Over a 3-4 week period you will focus on learning, or developing your skills, on two dance types, one ballroom and one latin. Once the 3-4 week set of sessions is complete, you will move on to learning, or developing your skill— Nigel Gotts

First came to Donahey's 4 years ago, and never looked back! Very professional, friendly instructors who can help you improve and above all enjoy your dancing no matter what level you are at. Well organised, full of friendly people to dance and socialise with, and most importantly you can stay up to date with all the "Strictly" gossip! I'd recommend these evenings to everyone. 💃👍— Gareth Nolan

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you learn to dance without a partner?

Yes, these group classes are set up so you can come without a partner. People often rotate or dance with others in the room. Attending alone is completely normal.

What should I wear to a beginner dance class?

Comfortable clothing you can move in and shoes that let you pivot rather than grip work best. Steer clear of anything too tight or stiff. A bottle of water is worth bringing along.

How much does a dance class usually cost?

Costs differ by venue and format, so it is best to check before attending. Group evenings are commonly paid per session. Asking in advance avoids any confusion on the night.

Which dance is best for beginners?

A gentle ballroom dance such as the waltz or a social foxtrot is a common starting point because the timing is easy to feel. These give you a solid base for the rest. Many people begin there before branching out.

What is the best dance to start as an adult?

For adults, a sociable ballroom or Latin dance taught from scratch tends to work well. Group classes make the learning relaxed and companionable. The key is choosing a style that keeps you turning up.

Is dancing good for heart failure?

Light, regular dancing can benefit general heart health for some people, but anyone with a heart condition should check with their doctor first. Whether it is suitable depends on the individual. Always seek medical advice before starting.
