Brunel’s SS Great Britain

Brunel’s SS Great Britain is one of the most iconic ships in British maritime history. Built in 1843, she was the first iron-hulled, screw-propelled steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Today, she is preserved in her original state as a museum ship in the Great Western Dockyard in Bristol, UK.

History of the SS Great Britain

The SS Great Britain was designed by the famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and was intended to revolutionise the transatlantic passenger trade. She was launched in 1843 and made her maiden voyage to New York in 1845. She was the first steamship to successfully cross the Atlantic and was an immediate success, with over 1,000 passengers travelling on her first voyage alone.

The SS Great Britain went on to make several more successful voyages before being sold to the British government in 1852. She was then used as a troopship for the Crimean War and later for transporting convicts to Australia. She was eventually retired from service in 1886 and sold to a private owner who intended to use her as a floating warehouse.

Preservation of the SS Great Britain

In 1970, the SS Great Britain was rescued from her final resting place in the Falkland Islands and brought back to Bristol. She was restored to her original condition and is now a museum ship, open to visitors. The museum offers a range of activities and tours, including a guided tour of the ship, a journey through time, and a chance to explore the engine room and other parts of the ship.
