Monnow Ballet School teaches classical ballet from a village hall in Redbrook, on the edge of the Wye Valley. It welcomes young dancers building their foundations as well as older adults joining the Silver Swans programme for strength and mobility. Run by an experienced teacher, it offers a personal, small-community feel. The school is a good fit for anyone in the area wanting proper ballet tuition close to home.
Dancers describe a welcoming environment where the teacher adapts each session to the group and to individuals within it. The classes are enjoyable, with room to work at your own pace while still being encouraged to stretch yourself. It suits both children needing patient, friendly instruction and adults returning to movement for wellbeing.
The school covers classical ballet for children alongside Silver Swans sessions designed for older adults who want to improve strength, flexibility and mobility. A typical class works through gentle warm-ups, barre and centre exercises, and simple sequences that build confidence and control. Teaching is tailored so that beginners and more experienced dancers are each given something appropriate to work on. The emphasis is on steady, achievable progress rather than rushing.
A newcomer can expect a genuinely warm welcome and a class that flexes to suit where you are starting from. Wear something comfortable you can move in and soft flat shoes; the teacher will advise on ballet footwear if you decide to carry on. There is no expectation that you arrive already knowing the steps.
Classes are held at the village hall in Redbrook, serving families and adults across the Monmouth and Wye Valley area. It is most easily reached by car.
Started to attend Silver Swans to build strength and mobility. Nina makes you feel so welcome, adapts to both class and individual class participants needs. The classes are fun, you can progress at your own pace but also lots of opportunity's to push yourself. All the moves and dances are specifically designed to build strength, improve balance and flexibility and challenge the old grey matter. So pleased I found this class, don't underestimate what this type of movement can do to improve mind, body and soul. Thanks Nina keep doing what you are doing.— Gail Daniel (1960's Diva)
Wonderful ballet school. Very experienced and friendly ideal for my daughters needs ❤— Rachel Wastie
Absolutely. The school runs Silver Swans sessions aimed at adults, and ballet can be taken up at any age for both enjoyment and physical benefit.
There is no upper limit; adults join for strength, mobility and pleasure rather than to perform professionally. Classes here are adapted so you progress safely at your own pace.
Yes, ballet is a solo discipline, so you can attend and improve entirely on your own with no partner required.
Comfortable, close-fitting clothing and soft flat shoes are ideal to begin with, and the teacher will suggest proper ballet shoes later. Contact the school if you are unsure what to bring.
Prices depend on the class and age group, so it is best to ask the school directly for current fees.
Ballet is an excellent foundation because it develops posture, balance and coordination that transfer to other styles, and its graded approach makes early progress clear.
