Yorkshire Rose Academy of Dance is a busy dance school in York teaching a mix of classical and contemporary styles to children and, from what parents say, with real staying power. It is a school built around long-term progress rather than one-off taster fun.

About Yorkshire Rose Academy of Dance

Parents repeatedly mention growing confidence, improved concentration and children who count down the days to their next class. That points to a school that is encouraging and well organised, with teachers who make lessons genuinely fun. It suits families after a supportive home for a child's dancing over the long haul.

Classes & Dance Styles

The timetable is broad, taking in ballet, tap, modern, street and musical theatre, with strengthening work such as PBT layered in for older pupils. If you are searching for ballet classes in York, that classical grounding sits alongside plenty of other options. While the school's heart is clearly with young dancers, ask about adult dance classes in York and whether social styles such as ballroom dancing in York, salsa classes in York or line dancing in York feature, as timetables do shift from term to term.

What to Expect on Your First Visit

A first class is a gentle introduction, with teachers described as making everyone feel at ease from the outset. Comfortable clothing to move in and footwear matched to the style are the sensible starting point, and it is worth asking what each class expects. The atmosphere reviewers describe is relaxed and encouraging.

Its such a nice friendly dance school, that also does lots of #dancefam social events.
This years summer school (Encanto) was brilliant, I was amazed at how much they managed to cram into the week with the help of Film & Theatre producer Stuart Piper 😀
All the kids did brilliantly, I know my daughter loved it, she had a whale — louise jallow

Both my kids attend classes at YRAD and absolutely love it! My little girl attends ballet, and tap & modern and has flourished, her levels of concentration have improved massively. My little boy attends street dance and his confidence has increased hugely. They both really look forward to their classes and also attend the 'Dance fam' sessions on a Saturday afternoon which they are always excited about and benefit from. The teachers are wonderful and the principle, Miss Kerry, is approachable and accommodating. As well as the dance classes, the school also has a focus on the student's mental we— Ally Damsell

“My daughter thrives at Yorkshire Rose Academy of Dance, enjoying ballet for many years, and, recently, adding PBT classes, for all-round strengthening & conditioning. The summer Musical Theatre production-in-a-week, of Bugsy Malone, was truly outstanding. Miss Kerry and her team, particularly West-End guru, Stuart Piper, produced a wonderful interpretation in such a short time. My daughter’s confidence swelled when she successfully auditioned for a solo in the performance, was given tips on overcoming her nerves, and then smashed it. Thoroughly recommend year-round classes and workshops, and — Lisa Obi

My 11 year old absolutely loves Yorkshire Rose. She joined nearly 3 years ago and we haven't looked back. She has made so many lovely friends who are all so supportive of each other.
The teachers are very proffesional and caring and are very approachable. They are alway available for advice and support if dancers want to take their dancing further. My daughter adores them all and has learned so much from them, not just dancing but about herself and her body.
Luckily , thanks to the amazing all inclusive deal, passionate and enthusiastic dancers like
mine can attend as many classes as they like— michelle fitzpatrick

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you start ballroom dancing?

Most people begin with a beginners' group class covering a couple of core dances and the basic hold and timing. Comfortable shoes with a little grip and a willingness to try are all you need at first.

What ballroom dance to learn first?

The waltz is a popular starting point thanks to its steady rhythm and clear step pattern, and the social foxtrot is another common first dance. Both give you a solid base to build on.

How hard is it to learn salsa?

Salsa is easy to begin, since the basic step is simple and repeats. Staying on the beat is the main thing to get used to, and that improves with practice.

Can a non-dancer learn salsa?

Yes. No prior experience is needed, and beginners usually find the basic pattern comes together quickly.

Is it possible to learn ballet as an adult?

Yes, adults take up ballet regularly. Ask the academy whether adult ballet is part of the current schedule.

What age is too late to start ballet?

It is never too late. Ballet can be started at any age, with benefits for posture, balance and coordination throughout life.
