Surface Area Dance Theatre CIC is a dance company based in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Founded in 2009, the company has since become one of the leading providers of contemporary dance in the North East of England.

Mission Statement

Surface Area Dance Theatre CIC strives to be an innovative, creative and inspiring dance company, committed to developing and promoting contemporary dance in the North East of England. We are passionate about creating and performing original and engaging dance works, as well as providing a platform for emerging artists to collaborate and grow.

History

Surface Area Dance Theatre CIC was founded in 2009 by Artistic Director, Ruth Janssen. Ruth has been a professional dancer and choreographer for over 20 years, and has worked with some of the most renowned dance companies in the UK.

The company began with a small group of dancers from Newcastle and the North East, and has since grown to include artists from all over the UK, Europe and beyond. The company has performed in venues across the UK and Europe, including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the London International Mime Festival, and the National Theatre of Wales.

Artistic Vision

Surface Area Dance Theatre CIC is committed to creating and performing original and engaging dance works. We are passionate about creating innovative and inspiring works that explore the physical and emotional possibilities of dance.

Our work is rooted in contemporary dance techniques, such as contact improvisation, release technique, floorwork and improvisation. We draw on a range of styles and influences, including classical ballet, modern dance, contemporary dance, physical theatre and performance art.

Collaborations

Surface Area Dance Theatre CIC is committed to collaborating with other artists and organisations to create exciting and innovative works. We have collaborated with musicians, visual artists, theatre makers, film makers and writers to create multi-disciplinary works.

Education and Outreach

Surface Area Dance Theatre CIC is dedicated to providing educational and outreach opportunities to young people in the North East of England. We offer workshops and classes for all ages and abilities, and aim to provide a platform for emerging artists to collaborate and grow.
