Steppin' Out Academy of Performance in Poole offers serious, multi-genre training for dancers who want to push themselves. Reviews from parents describe a school with high standards, engaged staff and regular opportunities to perform, compete and attend workshops. Its students take part in shows and summer intensives as part of a full programme. The academy suits committed young dancers as well as those searching for dance classes in Poole.
The academy leans towards a thorough, training-focused ethos, with classes spanning multiple styles and pathways for those who want to develop seriously. That depth appeals to families looking for structured, ongoing progression rather than a casual drop-in.
For anyone seeking dance lessons in Poole, the academy runs a broad multi-genre timetable, and adult dance classes in Poole feature alongside the children's programme. Ballroom dancing is a natural fit for its partner-based teaching, while salsa offers a more sociable, rhythm-led option. Whichever route you take, sessions are built to move you on step by step.
Come dressed in something you can move freely in, with soft shoes suited to your chosen style. Arriving early lets you meet the staff and understand how the class runs. If you are new to a particular genre, mention it so you can be pointed to the right group.
The academy sits within easy reach of Poole and the wider Purbeck area, drawing students from across the locality.
Today was my 3rd year of being invited by the director of the school Angela Taylor, to teach on Steppin’ Out Academy Summer Intensive and truly it always a joy.
The level of training is at the level of excellence and all the staff at the school should be so proud of the tools, that they are handing down to the next generation of young performers. I appreciate that the students are built from the ground up in all technical foundations, this is so evident as it gives the students the confidence to work with guest teachers and try steps that might be just outside of their comfort zone. My two sons (aged 8 and 11) have been attending classes at Steppin Out Academy since 2019. They take part in multiple genres of classes and also take part in their shows, compete in competitions, attend workshops plus participate in their Summer Intensive programme. When they started, they both enjoyed a small bit of dance and wanted to try to experience as much as possible. Steppin Out ignited a passion in them both which has taken their hobby and turned it into a way of life. The academy is a friendly environment which promotes good behaviour and a great place to learn and also to make l— Alison Redwood
Amazing school, amazing staff, amazing facilities! Our daughter has been with Miss Angie since aged 2, and has received the highest levels of training possible! She's achieved great things in dance, from performing with the Royal Ballet Company at the ROH aged just 10, won too many competitions to mention, including national level, and has now at age 15, won a full scholarship for vocational dance training at Tring Park School for the aperforming Arts. One of only 10 places available internationally! But without Miss Angie's & the other staff's fantastic training, and incredible support, there— Daren Williamson
This is an amazing Dance school. I have been a part of this school for nearly 10 years now with my daughter who started at the age of 4, she is now 14. Angela Taylor the principle of the school is an amazing teacher and cares very deeply about each and every child ensuring that they reach their full potential, whatever it may be. My daughter loves being in the shows each year but equally enjoys the classes and the exams. Steppin' Out is like my extended family and I would not hesitate in recommending this dance school.— Susan Luk-Paszyc
You start by joining a beginners' class and learning the basic hold, posture and a couple of core steps. Figures are added gradually, so no preparation is needed beforehand.
The waltz is a popular first dance thanks to its slow, steady rhythm, which gives you time to think. Many people then add a livelier style such as the quickstep once the basics settle.
The core salsa step is simple, so most people dance to the music quite quickly. Turns and timing take more practice, but that is a matter of repetition rather than talent.
Yes, salsa welcomes complete beginners and is taught largely by repetition. No prior dance background is expected.
The grapevine, step-touch, kick-ball-change, pivot turn and shuffle are common building blocks. Most beginner dances are made by combining them.
A short four-wall dance using only a few repeating steps is the gentlest introduction. It lets you follow along without memorising a great deal at once.
