Somerset Dance Umbrella is a well-regarded dance school in Wells, running classes from a central town venue under the direction of principal Sandra. It has a strong reputation for quality tuition, with families staying for many years. It particularly suits children and young people keen to develop their dancing seriously while still having fun.
Parents praise the atmosphere Sandra creates, her professionalism and a passion for dance that clearly rubs off on the pupils. Long-standing families describe incredible tuition and a teacher who understands what makes each child tick, so it suits committed young dancers who want to find their own passion.
The school offers structured tuition across a range of dance styles, taught to a high standard by experienced teachers. Pupils progress through graded levels and can work towards performances, giving their learning real direction. Steps and technique are built methodically, whether a child is just starting out or refining more advanced work.
Newcomers are eased in gently, with the teacher explaining each step and building confidence from the first session. Comfortable clothing that allows free movement and suitable soft shoes are usually all that is required.
The school is based in the centre of Wells, making it convenient for families across the city and surrounding Somerset villages.
My girls have been coming to Sandra at the Somerset dance umbrella for many many years now. They love the dance atmosphere that Sandra creates. She is so professional and has such a passion for dance which rubs off on the girls. She wants them to have fun and enjoy expressing themselves through dance, but also learning good technique. They have been in many shows and competitions which they love to perform in.
It is such a great dance school in the beautiful setting of the town hall.
I have had adult dance lessons and theatre workshop sessions. Sandra encouraged me to join the local theatre gr— Jessica Errington
We absolutely love this dance school! My daughter has been going to this school since she was 4 years old, she's now nearly 13. The quality of dance tuition is incredible. Miss Sandra knows exactly what makes my daughter tick. She has allowed her to find her passion for dance. She has progressed incredibly with dance getting distinctions for every exam.
She knows the kids inside out, knows exactly what music and dance would suit them for their solos, and she is so encouraging to all the kids!!! We wouldn't go anywhere else!
Thank you!— Corali Sacerdote
This is a seriously fabulous dance school. Professionalism to the highest quality and amazing standard of teachers and pupils. Searched for 12 months to find a school if this standard and my daughter who is now 11 absolutely loves it. Throughout lockdown they were also amazing providing zoom classes and kept the children entertained every lesson. Couldn’t recommend this school highly enough ❤️— Sue iDetox

Begin with a beginners' class and learn one or two dances from scratch. Your repertoire and confidence grow naturally from there.
The waltz is a popular first dance because its three-beat rhythm is easy to follow. A social foxtrot is another gentle option.
Yes; adults can take up ballet and make good progress with proper beginner instruction. It benefits posture, strength and coordination at any age.
There is no age at which ballet stops being enjoyable or beneficial recreationally. Only professional performance careers rely on an early start.
Common building blocks are the grapevine, step-touch, kick-ball-change, shuffle and pivot turns. Line dances arrange these simple moves in varied sequences.
A short routine made of a few repeated steps is the easiest place to begin. A teacher can recommend a suitable one when you attend.
